For fifty years, Whanganui’s photographer Richard Wotton has quietly observed the world through his camera. Largely self-taught, he belongs to the generation of New Zealand photographers inspired by ‘The Active Eye’ exhibition of 1975, which helped redefine photography as a serious artistic practice in this country.
His work shares the directness and clarity of American photographers Walker Evans and Paul Strand yet remains unmistakably his own: patient, precise and deeply attentive to the play of light. Through architecture, interiors, landscapes and portraits, Wotton transforms ordinary subjects into quietly compelling studies of form, atmosphere and place.
