In 1916 problems of supplying water water to Durie Hill suburb was an issue. The solution a water tower on either Durie Hill or Bastia Hill. With a proposed height of 100 feet and to contain 200,000 gallons of water the construction of the tower on Bastia Hill began in 1925.
The architect/designer was N Crofton Staveley (City Engineer). It took 2 years to build with the last section of the tower completed by July 1927.
