Celebrate the reopening of the Sarjeant Gallery this year by planting the Sarjeant Rose in your garden

The Sarjeant Gallery redevelopment project is drawing to the end. The 105 year old heritage building has been earthquake strengthened, restored and extended with the new modern wing Te Pātaka o Sir Te Atawhai Archie John Taiaroa which will double the size and capability of the facility.

The Sarjeant Gallery will reopen on Pukenamu Queen’s Park in late 2024.

For over a year now the Friends Rose Committee has been working with Bob, Cath and Samantha Matthews of Matthews Roses in Whanganui, on a very special project to celebrate the reopening of the Sarjeant Gallery. Bred in Whanganui by multi award winning rose breeder Bob Matthews of Matthews Roses, The Sarjeant Rose is a brand new rose, bred and named specifically for the Sarjeant Gallery in its reopening year 2024. The Sarjeant Rose combines contemporary with classical and bears vintage cupped shaped blooms on an easy-care, healthy modern plant which will grow up to about 1.5 meters. The shifting palette of soft peachy pink to antique blush petals carries the most delicious perfume and repeat flowers in clusters are wonderful for picking. Our Sarjeant Rose is a bush rose rather than a standard rose and the Matthews say it is a vigorous grower!

Matthews Nurseries Ltd is a family business established 77 years ago in Whanganui. Matthews roses have won awards across New Zealand and overseas, including the coveted Gold Star of the South Pacific award and a prestigious Silver Certificate at The Hague International Rose Trials in The Netherlands.

We are delighted with this exquisite rose, bred and nurtured for the Sarjeant Gallery’s friends and supporters by the Matthews team.
Celebrate this milestone year in the life of the Sarjeant Gallery by pre-ordering your Sarjeant Rose now. Come the reopening of the Sarjeant Gallery on Pukenamu Queen’s Park, The Sarjeant Rose will be blooming along Victoria Avenue (Whanganui District Council have confirmed they will plant a bed), outside Tylee Cottage and all over Whanganui - including in your garden!

The Sarjeant Rose is $60 to the Friends of the Sarjeant or $65. Any courier charges are additional.

This is a great time to renew your membership of the Friends and do so before placing your rose order to ensure you secure the reduced price.
The Sarjeant Rose is a limited edition rose so to be fair there is a limit of 5 plants per customer.
Pre-order The Sarjeant Rose now, and the root stock will be ready in late June and blooming by the end of the year. Matthews can courier the plants anywhere in New Zealand for a fee or, why not join the Sarjeant team for a Sarjeant Rose Collection Day event at Tylee cottage on the 6th of July.
This is a special fundraising project by the Friends of the Sarjeant and profits raised will go to the Sarjeant Gallery.
Growing roses is not complicated and a huge (and fragrant!) pleasure. Matthews supply a ‘how to’ guide with every rose and have a fantastic website which includes a step by step guide to planting roses in June and lots of other information. See matthewsroses.co.nz
